Etymology

Named from R. Tarrant, v. Tarrant H. par. supra , RNs. infra ; for the DB identification, v. Eyton 131–2, VCHDo 3107.William de Antioch (e ), William de Antiochia occurs in connection with this place in l12AD , 1242 Ch (Sarah, his sister, gave Tarent to Tarrant abbey) and 1242–3 Fees, cf. also Nicholas Antioch (e ) (als. de Antyoch )1299 Ipm, 1314AD , etc, v. tūn ; the same family gave name to Antioch Fm in Stalbridge par. infra . The later affix Rawston , as suggested by Fägersten 61, probably contains the pers.n. Ralph as in Rawston D 384; it may be more than a coincidence that the DB manor was held in 1086 by one Radulfus (Ralph ), but earlier forms are needed. There was a mill here in 1086 DB (VCHDo 3107).
