Etymology

Probably, as indicated by the DB form in -eme -, 'farm of the Stybbhǣme ', i.e. 'farm of the dwellers at a place called Stybbhām ('tree-stump village')', or 'farm of the dwellers by the tree-stump', v. stybb , hām , hǣme (gen.pl. hǣma ), tūn , cf. Bockhampton 1367, Witchampton par. infra , Tengstrand MN 97. The affix Tarente - is from R. Tarrant which rises here, v. par. name supra .
