Etymology

'The upper of higher manor of Sydling', with the affix upp 'up, higher up' to distinguish it from Brodesideling , the earlier name for Sydling StN., v. par. name supra . Up Sydling is 'higher up' than Sydling St N. and is also 'higher upstream' on Sydling Water, a tributary of R. Frome, which rises here (spring marked 6″). There was formerly a chapel here (v. Chapel infra ), and there is mention of a watermill here in 1279 Drew (cf. the DB mill at the adjacent hamlet of Fifehead Sydling supra ).
