Etymology

Berwick (formerly Manor House) (SY 524896), Berwick 1795 Boswell, Berewich '1194, 1195 P, Berewyk (e )1250 FF, 1273–80 Ipm, 1285 FAet freq to 1347 Cl, Berewik (e )1265 Pat, 1273–80 Ipm, 1275 RH, 1412 FA, Borewyk (e ) (sic)1280Ass , 1399 Cl, Berwyk (e )1340–6 Ipm, 1431 (p), Berwyk Sancti Jacobi 1447Russ , Barwick (e )1587, 1607Russ , 1647 SC, the Farme of Barwick (e )1667Russ . From OE  bere-wīc literally 'barley farm', but more usually 'outlying part of an estate, outlying lands of a manor retained for the lord's use'. The 1447 form presumably suggests that there was once a chapel here dedicated to St James, cf. capellam de Swera 1207–8 Memo and a chapel mentioned in 1290 FF.
