Lower Lye (ST 247056), Lye Lane, Leye 1351, La Lee 1356 both Pat, cf. Cristina atter Leghe 1333SR , Hither Lye & Yonder Lye , Lye Mdw 1844TA , from lēah (dat.sg. lēage ) 'wood, woodland clearing'; Lower Lye is so named in relation to Higher Lye in Yarcombe par. PN D 652.
