Etymology

'Oak-tree ford' v. āc , ford . In 1086 DB the manor of Alford (for Acford ) was held by Schelin (also called Eschelinus in Exon p. 31), and his descendants here were Robert son of Eskelin a1155 MontC, Robert Eskylling , Robert son of Scilling c.1155 ib, John Eskelingh '1199 Cur, John Eskelling 1201 P, Hy 3AddCh , Walter Eschelling 'Hy 3ib , etc; on the alternation of Esc -, Sc - in the pers.n., v. ANInfl 55. The affix -Eskelin , -Eskelling , etc, later -Shilling , served to distinguish this place from the neighbouring pars. of Child Okeford and Okeford Fitzpaine. The modern form Shillingstone is a late formation with tūn 'village', v. IPN 131.
