Etymology

One of a group of pars. sharing the name Okeford, 'oak-tree ford' from āc and ford , cf. Shillingstone (olim Okeford Shilling ) 2 238 and Child Okeford supra (q. v. for the possible site of the original ford). The distinguishing affixes are manorial. Four hides in Okeford Fitzpaine were part of the estate held of Glastonbury abbey by the wife of Hugh fitz Grip at the time of DB later held by Alvred de Lincoln and his heirs, probably as a result of his marriage to her, v. VCHDo 355–6, Hutch3 4327. The spellings Auveray , Affray , etc represent the OFr  forms Auverey , Auveré of the OG  pers.n. Alverad . Nic (h )ol (e ) shows AN interchange of n and l in the name Lincoln, v. PN L 1 2–3, with further analogical rationalization in the form Nicholas , v. Zachrisson, ANInfl 130. The manor was held by the family of Fitz Payn (filius Pagani ) from the second half of the 13th cent.; Robert Fitz Payn is named as one of the heirs of the last Alvred de Lincoln who died in 1264 (Ipm), and Okeford Nichol is said to be held by Robert son of Payn in 1282 Ch, etc, cf. Wootton Fitzpaine par. infra . The late colloquial forms Fippeny and Foppen for Fitz Payn are to be noted, the former perhaps showing some folk-etymological wordplay suggested by the affix of the neighbouring par. of Shillingstone (Shillingaukford 1575) 2 239.
