Etymology

Redhone (lost), Redhone 1765 Tayl, Redhone or Redhove (a hamlet) 1795 Boswell, Redhove (sic)1774 Hutch1, 1811 OS, 1863 Hutch3, giving name to Redhone Hundred, v. Beaminster Forum & Redhone Hundred supra . Its exact location is uncertain. Taylor's map places Redhone just NW of Beaminster, but on 1811 OS Redhove is marked 2 miles S of Beaminster in Netherbury par., at about SY 485975. Hutch1 and Boswell place it further E in this par., as does Hutch3: 'Redhove has now only two houses that go by that name, three miles south-east of Beaminster, in North Porton, where the ancient courts were held, which are now neglected' (2 153).
