Etymology

Probably 'house at the place where mint grows' from OE  minte and ærn. OE  mynet 'a coin, money' is formally possible as first el. but looks unlikely here (cf. Fägersten 199, Watts CDEPN 416). The affixes Up (per ), Great and Magna (Lat  magna 'great') distinguish this place from Minterne Parva (once in Buckland N. par., since 1933 in this par., v. 3239, 244).
