Etymology

'Wood or woodland clearing where tiles are made', v. tigel , lēah , cf Tyley Gl 2258 and another example of the same name s.n. Tileplace Cottages Brk 131. It gives name to Tiley Knap in Buckland N. par. 3 249. Donetish is Duntish in the same par. 3 242. There is still extensive woodland just to the W of here. With regard to tile-making here, it might be noted that Clinger Fm ('clayey wooded slope') also in Buckland N. par. 3 242 lies 1 mile S, and Clay St in Hermitage par. supra is 2 miles W.
