Etymology

Tatnam Fm (SZ 013920), Totnesham 1520Rent , Tot (t )nam 1529Ct et freq to 1543ib , Tottenham 1661 Hutch1, Tatnam 1826 Gre, cf. Tatnam Cl & Tatnam Fd 1843TA . The second el. is probably hamm 'enclosure, etc' rather than hām 'homestead'; the first el. is probably the OE  pers.n. Tot (t )a found in Tottenham Mx 78, etc. The form Totnes - is probably analogical, a str.gen.sg.ending -es having been added to ME  Tot (e )n - from OE  Tot (t )an - (wk.obl.), v. -an .
