Etymology

From PrWelsh or PrCorn *crǖg 'mound, hill, barrow', with explanatory OE  hyll 'hill', thus identical in origin with Church Hill So (DEPN), Creech Hill in Wimborne St G. par. supra , etc, cf. Ekwall Studies1 33ff. The hill referred to is Crichel Down (347′) infra . Long distinguishes this place from More Crichel par. supra and Little Crichel in More Crichel, 'on account of its greater length' (Hutch3 3482), v. lang 1 . The other affixes are manorial: Crichel Lucy (1869 Hutch3, 'the eastern half of the vill') was named from the family of Robert de Lucy 1202 Hutch3, Robert de Luscy , Margaret de Luci 1208 P; Crichel Govis (1869 Hutch3, 'the westerly part of the parish') was named from the family of Roger de Gouiz 1233 Cl, Brian de Gouiz 1258 FF, John Gouytz 1375 Cl. The form to chircelford 'to the ford of Crichel', occurs in the AS bounds of Tarrant Hinton, and describes the point where the Salisbury-Blandford F. road (earlier 'Week Street', v. Week Street Down in Gussage St M. par. supra ) crosses the small stream which flows through the Crichels to join R. Allen, v. ford . On the identification of the DB forms, some of which may strictly belong under More Crichel, v. VCHDo 365, 92, 100, DBGazetteer 119; some of the other early forms without affix may also strictly belong under More Crichel or Little Crichel .
