Etymology

Herbury (Plant.) (SY 613809), cult ' voc ' Arebury 1429Midd , Herbyleigh (sic)1811 OS, Herbury (Moor )1841TA , possibly from eorð-burh 'earthwork' although there are no known archaeological remains here. Herbury occupies a small but distinctive rectangular promontory with the waters of West Fleet on three and a half of its sides; the partly enclosed bay called Works infra lies on its NE & NW sides.
