Etymology

Pitcombe Dairy (SY 583897), Petcombe 1604Russ , Pitcomb 1774 Hutch1, probably to be identified with (Porta de ) Pedecumbe 1288 FF, cf. also Pitcombe Cowleaze 1838TA . The farm lies in a small deep hollow which opens on to the valley of R. Bride, v. cumb , first el. perhaps *pide, *pidu 'marsh, fen' rather than an OE  pers.n. *Pyda , cf. discussion of Pyd (de )mylle in Sherborne par. 3 368. The road from Little Bredy to Long Bredy crosses the par. bdy here, hence no doubt Lat. porta 'gate'.
