Etymology

Stapleford (lost) Stapleford 1774 Hutch1, 1795 Boswell, Stapelford (e )1244Ass , 1258For , 1268 Ass all (p), 1285 FA, 1288Ass et freq to 1414 Cl, Stapulford 1360 Ipmet freq to 1510DCM , Stapleforde 1386 Cl, Stapylford 1471 IpmR, 'ford marked by a post or posts', from OE  stapol and ford . Two fords are marked 6″, but the most important crossing of R. Hooke is at Hooke Bridge infra . According to Hutch1 1 293, Stapleford 'is supposed to have been the ancient village, now depopulated. But it seems rather to have been a distinct parish, long since included in Hooke'.
