Etymology

Frampton Court (on site of Benedictine Priory) (SY 625947) is Frampton Ho 1811 OS, The Court 1939 Kelly. The former priory here was a cell to the abbey of St Stephen's at Caen, which possessed this manor in 1086 DB. There are numerous references to the priory of Frampton in 13th-, 14th- and 15th-cent. documents (e.g. priore de Frunton '1214 P, prior de Fromton 1275 RH, etc., note also 'priory of Frompton alias Came '1387 Pat (for the spelling Came , cf. Winterborne Came par. 1 261 in which the manorial affix is also from the French p.n.), 'the manor called the priory of Frompton '1403 Fine. Frampton Court was rebuilt c.1704 (Hutch3 2299); the annual court leet for choosing a constable and tithingmen was held here (ib 2276), cf. Court Bridge 1673, 1676Sheridan , 1791 Boswell, v. court .
