Etymology

Named from Fontmell Brook which rises near here, v. RNs.infra ; Lat  magna 'great' to distinguish it from Fontmell Parva in Ch. Okeford par. supra . East and West F (o )unt (e )mell , -mill are the names of two tithings in c. 1560Glyn , 1664 HTax. The Anglo-Saxon bounds of the manor are given in S 419.
