Etymology

Burwood (SU 062142), Burwood 1811 OS, sub bosc ' in Borwod (e )1285Cecil , 1324, bosc ' in Borwod (e )1325MinAcct , Borewode 1292, 1318Cecil , Bourewode 1314 Ipm, 1508Cecil , Burwod '1369MinAcct , Burwood coppice 1573 Hutch3, Borrowwood , Burrow wood close , Burrow wood feyld e17CecilMap , Burrowood 1619CH , Burwoodd 1621ib , Burrow Fd & Burrow Wd 1846TA , probably 'wood at or near the fortified place', from burh and wudu , although it is not apparent to what burh referred; this is still a wood. The spellings for the first el. may suggest confusion with būr 1 'cottage' (cf. terr ' …iuxta la Boure 1382Cecil which may represent this el.) and burg 'burrow'.
