Etymology

'A cutting, a pass', with reference to its situation between two hills, v. corf , cf. Corfe Castle 15. The affix Mullen is from OFr  molin 'a mill', referring to the valuable mill here, which rendered 20 shillings (a high value) in 1086 DB (VCHDo 390), v. Mill infra ; the isolated form Croft molendina contains Lat  molendinum 'mill', the spelling Croft showing metathesis and a development of final -t also found in the ME spellings for Corfe Castle 16. The affix Huberd , Hubert is either from Hubert de Burgo who held Corf in 1212 Fees (90), or from Hubert la Veylle who held ⅛ of a knight's fee in Corf Huberd in 1303 FA; Giles is probably from Giles de Hardyngton who held ¼ of a knight's fee in Corfmolyn in 1346 FA, cf. Egidius de Erdyngton 1327SR . Corfe St Nicholas is so called because it 'anciently and now belongs to St Nicholas's hospital near Sarum' (Hutch3 3359), cf. St Nicholas Lands 1610NichHosp and St Hubert's Church infra .
