Etymology

'Farm called after Dydel', from an OE  pers.n. Dydel (a derivative of Duda , v. Redin 63) and -ingtūn , cf. Ekwall PN -ing 33 s.n. Didling Sx. In the OE charters cited, which describe the bounds of the estate of Didlington (identical with the modern par. of Chalbury), a point on the S bdy is referred to as on dydelingdune . of dydelingdune 946 (14) Harl (S 519), on dydeling dune middewearde . ⁊ of dydeling dune 956 (14) ib (S 609), 'on to (the middle of) Dydel's hill, from Dydel's hill', v. -ing 4 , dūn , although alternatively dydelingdune might be 'hill at Dydeling ' ('Dydel's place'), v. -ing 2 .
