Etymology

Probably 'pasture or plot on the hill', from dūn and an unrecorded OE  etisc (corresponding to Goth  atisk 'cornfield', OHG  ezzisch 'piece of land'), as first proposed by Ekwall Studies1 73. The spellings with d would then be due to influence from edisc 'enclosed park' (a well recorded word in fact favoured by Fägersten 204 as second el. in this name). There was in any case an important park here, referred to as 'the park of Dunthete '1248 FF (Drew), 'the park of Alured (de Lincoln ) at Dunhethis '1249 FF, parci de Dondyssh '1264 (e15) MiltRoll , park of Dunetys 1280 Ch, Duntish (e ) Parke 1583SPDom , 1616Lane , etc, v. park , Cantor & Wilson 2147–9, cf. f.ns. infra .
