Etymology

Hyde Ho (SY 870905), Middle Hyde Dairy, Hr Hyde Heath, Lr Hyde Heath, Hyde 1285 FA, 1374 Pat, 1402 Pat, 1404 Pat et passim .Hide 1288Ass , 1664 HTax, Hyda 1291 Tax, La Hyde cum Strafford 1316 FA, the Hyde 1476 Cl, Hide Stratford 1696DCMCt , Upr Hide 1774 Hutch1, Lr Hyde , Upr Hyde , Hyde Heath 1811 OS, Hyde Green 1845TA , v. hīd 'a hide of land'; Lr Hyde is now Hyde Ho, Upr Hyde is now Woodlands infra . This tithing in Barrow hundred (1285 FA, 1664 HTax, 1795 Boswell, etc.) seems to be identical with that called Stretford in 1327SR , 1332 SR, cf. the forms cited from 1316 FA and 1696DCMCt , v. strǣt , ford . The ford was no doubt on R. Piddle or Trent, perhaps where it is crossed near Hyde Ho by the Bloxworth-Wool road which may then be the strǣt referred to; the nearest Roman road is four miles NW of Hyde Ho.
