Etymology

St Peter's Abbey (remains) (SY 577852), Petres mynstre æt Abbodes byrig m11 AbbotsC, in to S e Petre æt Abbodesbyrig 1058 × 1066 ASWrits (S 1064), Ecclesia Abodesberiensis 1086 DB, Ecclesie beati Pet ' de Abbedesbur '1221Ilch , 'convent of St Peter 's , Abbotesbury ' 1461, 'monastery of SS . Peter and Paul , Abbotesbury '1505 Pat, v. mynster . The Benedictine monastery here was founded in the mid-11th century (for an account of the early history of the Abbey, v. VCHDo 248–53 and especially Keynes, AbbotsC 207–43). The ruins and remains are described in Hutch1 1 537, RCHM 1 4–8. The conventual church contained chapels dedicated to St Andrew (mentioned 1405 Hutch1 1536), St Anne (1442 ib), and St Mary (1494 ib, cf. ecclesie Sancte Marie de Abbodesbiry 1231 Pat, oure Ladi Chapell ' within the Abbey Church of Abottisbury 1501Ilch ).
