Historical Forms

  • Thevethryng 1330 SR

Etymology

The early forms suggest a place-name of the derisive nickname type, derived from OE  þēofa þring , 'crowd of thieves.' For further parallels v. Thuborough infra 168. The curious corruption in modern times is difficult of explanation.
