Historical Forms

  • Trimpestone 1351 Exon

Etymology

No stone survives here to help in explaining this difficult name. Professor Ekwall suggests that the first element may be a noun *trempel , a derivative of the verb to tramp . In that case the compound might denote a stone used as a stile or the like.
