Indicombe

Early-attested site in the Parish of West Buckland

Historical Forms

  • Byendecoumbe 1314 Ass
  • Hyndecomb 1330 SR
  • Yundecomb 1333 SR

Etymology

Indicombe was the home of John de Byendecoumbe (1314Ass ), John de Hyndecomb (1330SR ) and Thomas de Yundecomb (1333SR ). The first element is one that is common in Devon p.n.'s, v. infra 658. We may note also Indilake in Knowstone and Indiwell in Swimbridge for which no early forms have been found. In all cases the meaning must be 'beyond' or 'on the other side of' from OE  begeondan , begeonde . In most cases the places in question were probably named by the people in the nearest village or large settlement. Thus Indicombe is about one mile distant from West Buckland on the slope of a hill above an intervening valley. Indio in Bovey Tracy infra 467 would have been so named by the people of Bovey village because it lies on the other side of the Bovey river. See further supra xxxvii.
