Ringcombe

Early-attested site in the Parish of West Anstey

Historical Forms

  • Ringhendona 1086 DB
  • Ringedon 1249 Ass
  • Westrington juxta Westanesteghe 1291 Ass

Etymology

The relation of these names to one another is not certain. Ringcombe is in a valley. Ringedon was probably the hill above it. The two names with the same first element, together with early forms Ringhen -, Ringe -, make it likely that in both cases we have to do with a pers. name Hringa , an unrecorded pet-form of one of the numerous OE  names in Hring -.
