Etymology

The head of the valley is on the parish boundary and the first part of the combe runs parallel to its course. The first element may therefore be the OE  rān , 'strip or boundary,' discussed under Rhon Hill (PN Bk 55). Cf. rancumb BCS 724, a Devon charter.
