Etymology

v. wielle . The first element is no doubt identical with that of Marlborough (W), Merleberge DB, æt Mærle beorge 1110 ASC and Malborough infra 307. This is a pers. name Mǣrla , an l -derivative of Mǣra .Cf. OGer  Merila , Merlus (Förstemann PN 1102).
