Etymology
In 1340 (SR ) there is mention of a John de Brouneston , which suggests that Brouneston is a lost place from which the tor took its name. The farm is probably to be associated with John Broun mentioned in the same subsidy-roll, the meaning being thus 'Brown's farm,' v. tun .
