Etymology

The first element is probably connected with the stem wag - found in OE  wagian , 'to shake,' of which Ekwall (RN 439) suggests we have a noun-derivative in Wawne (Y). The same compound is found in the form wagufen in the Thorndon Hall Charter (v. infra 296n. 1). The whole name would mean 'quaking marsh,' v. fenn .
