Etymology

Crown Hill is a modern name invented c. 1880. The place was earlier called Nackershole 1765 D, Nackers Hole , Knackers Hole in a map of 1823 (ex inf. Mrs Rose-Troup). The meaning of this name (cf. Knackers Knowle infra 324) is uncertain, but it was clearly a term of contempt. Cf. Knackers Hole (PN Wo 49).
