Etymology

They lie along a stream and we have the same stream-name which is found in on fengel (BCS 724) in the land boundaries of Culmstock infra 612. The name is clearly English as is shown by the initial f . It must be a derivative of the stem fang , 'to hold, catch,' found in OE  fengel , 'prince,' but its application to a stream is obscure. It might perhaps be used of a stream where there was good prospect of a catch.
