Etymology

It may be that we have here an OE  derivative dylfet from OE  delfan , 'to dig,' of the same type as græfet , stān -hīewet , noted under Grevatt's (PN Sx 17). Hence, 'place hollowed out.' An old marl-pit is marked close at hand.
