Etymology

The first element in this name is probably the same as that found in ceommenige (KCD 940), now Chimney (O), ceomman bricg (KCD 652) and ceomman treow (BCS 820). All these point to an OE  pers. name Cēomma , a pet form of such a name as Cēolmǣr . The second element must be wielle , 'spring'; the place lies high up on the hillside so that it is not likely even on topographical grounds that we can have any stream-name here, as suggested by Blomé (14). There are springs all along the ridge.
