Etymology

This seems to be a triple compound of OE  geat, hæme and tun , the whole meaning 'the farm of the settlers by the gate.' Cf. Cotmaton infra 598. The 'gate' may be the comparatively narrow part of the valley here on either side of which the hills recede.
