Etymology

We may compare Richard atte Serte 1365 (Crondal Records, Hants) and le Serte 15th (VCH Herts 11, 298), terra vocata Seart (1538LRMB ), medieval field- names in Herts. This may be AFr  assart , OFr  essart , 'clearing in a forest,' 'piece of forest land converted into arable by grubbing up trees and brushwood.' There was no forest here in the legal sense, but the district was well wooded. For other names of this type, v. Introd. xxvii.
