Etymology
Perhaps 'Ēalāc's hill', v. dūn ; for the pers.n. OE Ēalāc (LVD) cf. Elkstone (PN St 55–6), Elkesley (PN Nt 78). There was an early replacement of dūn by tūn . This leaves out of consideration the DB form Tilchestune ; initial T - is simply a misdivision of the name preceded by the preposition æt . Spellings in -ch - are to be explained as AN forms for -k -, and -tune is presumably an error for -dune .
