The Nunnery of St Mary was situated here, cf. moniales ecclesie beate Marie de Prato c. 1180 Darley.It was later known as Nuns Green, Nunnes Grene 1610 Speed, Nuns greene 1611 DbA xxxvi, Nun (s ) Green 1638 Derby 1675 Ogilby, 1792 Cal. The name King's Mead remains as one of the electoral wards of Derby.
