Etymology

Bradley (lost), Bradelei 1086 DB, Bradley 1409, 1577DuLa , 1665 ParReg Duffield. 'Broad clearing', v. brād , lēah . The name remained as New Bradley Road 1791EnclA , now Wyver Lane and Bradley Brook c. 1800 FW, now probably Coppice Brook. The name was thus used in the late 19th century on both sides of the R. Derwent and it seems possible that Bradley was the earlier name of the manor and that it was subsequently replaced by Belper. Cf. Lawn Cottage infra .
