Etymology

The evidence of the later forms suggests that there were alternative names for this place. The earlier may be 'reeve's stones', v. (ge)rēfa, stān , whilst the alternative name is 'raven's or ravens' stones', v. hræfn , stān . The grange belonged to Garendon Abbey (Lei), v. grange .
