The Spillers (field)

Early-attested site in the Parish of Greystoke

Historical Forms

  • Spelloe 1704 Terrier
  • Spellor 1749 ib

Etymology

The Spillers (field). If, as is probable, this is identical with the site which appears as Spelloe 1704 Terrier, Spellor 1749 ib., it seems to be an example, unique in the county, of the well-recorded compound spell -hōh , 'speech hill or mound.'
