Etymology

Godeslach , Godeslath ') 1299 P, Godesbech 1200 Fine (p), Coddesbache 1297 Cl, Codesbach 1307–27 VR, Codesbeche 1327 Pat, 'stream and valley at a cot', v. bece 1 , bæce 1 .The first el. is cot 'a cottage', as in Wallerscote 201supra . Catesbache adjoined Wallerscote and must be associated with Beach Fm etc. supra . The first el. has been replaced with god 1 'God', probably by the monastic owners of the place, which was given to Vale Royal Abbey in 1278 by the Nuns of Chester who owned the adjoining Wallerscote.
