Etymology

'Hall at the rock', PrWelsh  *lis ən garreg , v. *lisso- (llys Welsh), *en [ən] def.art. (an early form parallel to Cumbric *en , MCorn  and MBret en (*sindos Brit, but ir OWelsh), cf. Jackson 657 and 10 (also 10 n.2)), carrec (carreg Welsh). The p.n. is discussed by Ekwall DEPN and ES 64 ii 322, cf. also IPN 130. On the type of p.n. compound and the form of the first el. (a vowel represented by OE  -i -, -y -) see Jackson 226 n.2, 285. The site of Liscard Hall, 100–312914, is now in Central Park. The original manor house was probably elsewhere, cf. Old Manor infra . The rock in the p.n. may have been one of the reefs at Black Rock or Red Noses, or Yellow Noses infra , but it could well have been an outcrop, or the whole, of the rocky hill on which Liscard lies, cf. Stoneby Drive infra .
