Etymology

'Þorsteinn's farmstead', from tún or tūn and the ON  pers.n. Þorsteinn (anglicized Thurstan ). The argument about the etymology 'Thor's-stone-ton', deriving from an outcrop of sandstone on Thurstaston Common, belongs to pseudo-folklore. That etymology is incorrect, cf. Orm2 ii511, Sheaf3 3 (467 and 475), 16 (3893 and p.31), N & Q 5th ser., VIII 364, 6th ser., III 30.
