Etymology
'William le Prayers's enclosure(s)', from (ge)hæg and the surname Praers , of an ancient Cheshire family (Orm2 iii 299–301). William le Prayers , de Preyers , de Prayers was lord of half the nearby manor of Duddon (273supra ) in 1351 BPR, and it is alleged in 1353ChFor that about 1339, near Tarvin, he 'fenced in an enclosure of sixty acres' (inclusit unam hayam de lx acris ). This is the earliest allusion to Prior's Heys.
