Etymology

Stock's Hill (110–655654), Stocks Stairs 1842 OS, cf. Stock Hill Field 1845TA , and le Stoc , Stocfeld , (le ) Chirchestoc , Chyrchestok (e )1334 VR, from stoc 'a secondary settlement', with stǣger 'a stair', and hyll 'a hill' (there is a steep ascent here), feld , and cirice 'a church' (St. Chad's Church, at Church Hill supra ). Cf. Way's Green, Welsh Lane, Hooterhall infra .
