Wendover Dean

Early-attested site in the Parish of Wendover

Etymology

The second element in this name is not, as one might expect, the word dean , 'valley,' but is a feudal addition of which the explanation is found in Bracton's Note -Book (ii. 440) where we read that Robert Decanus (i.e. dean) of Wendover had a lay fee in Wendover.
