Etymology

Names in Sand -are not on record in OE  but their existence is made probable by the name Sanda which may be inferred from sandan dene (BCS 1225). Sand -names are common on the Continent and include Sandheri (Förstemann PN 1297) and it may be that an OE  Sandhere lies behind this name. If so the early Sant -forms would have to be explained as due to the common confusion of t and d in AN spellings. Cf. IPN 109.Hence, 'Sandhere's hill.' v. dun .
