Etymology

There is no doubt that the second element in this name is OE  (ge )mōt , 'meeting,' and that the first element is a Scandinavianised form of OE  scīr , 'shire.' In the passage in 1417 (IpmR) there is mention of the viam vocat ' Skyremot quae ducit versus Henley . For the full significance of this name v. Introd. xvii.
